You’re Not Awkward—You Just Haven’t Had the Right Photographer Yet

If you’re like most couples I meet, the first thing you say when we talk about photos is, “We’re super awkward in front of the camera.”
Let me be blunt: no, you’re not.

You’re just not used to being photographed by someone who knows how to make you feel like yourselves.

The Real Problem Isn’t You—It’s the Process

Most people have never had professional photos taken before. And if they have, it was probably something stiff and uncomfortable—like school photos or a weird family session at the mall.

So when it’s time for engagement or wedding photos, that memory sticks. You start to assume the camera is the problem, or that you’re just “not photogenic.” But that’s not true.

You’re not awkward.
You’re just human. And when you’re being directed by someone who’s more worried about posing than connection, it’s easy to shut down or feel fake.

What Makes Someone Feel Comfortable?

The key to natural, real, emotional photos has less to do with how you look and everything to do with how you feel.

Here’s what I do differently as a wedding photographer:

1. We Talk First—Like Normal People

Before I ever point a camera at you, I get to know you a little. I ask questions. I listen. I learn how you interact together. That tells me way more than any pose guide ever could.

2. I Don’t Pose You. I Prompt You.

There’s a difference. Instead of stiff instructions like, “tilt your chin 15 degrees and don’t blink,” I’ll say something like, “walk toward me while cracking the dumbest joke you can think of.” Or, “Tell her what you thought when you first saw her in that dress.”

Those real reactions—the smiles, the side-glances, the natural closeness—that’s where the magic is.

3. I Give You Space

Sometimes, I just let you be. A quiet moment. A breath between photos. I’m always watching, but not always directing. Because those in-between moments? They’re often the most powerful.

Tips to Help You Feel More Confident

If you’re still feeling nervous, here are a few tips:

  • Pick clothes you actually like wearing. Don’t force yourself into something that feels too fancy or uncomfortable.

  • Schedule an engagement session. It’s low-pressure and helps you get used to the camera (and me).

  • Be honest with me. If you’re feeling nervous, say so. I can’t help if I don’t know.

  • Trust the process. You don’t have to know what to do. That’s my job.

You Deserve Photos That Feel Like You

Your wedding day isn’t a photo shoot. It’s your real life. It’s hugs from your parents, tears from your partner, and laughs with your best friends. My job is to make sure you see all of that in your photos—not a version of yourself you don’t even recognize.

If you’re worried about feeling awkward, I get it. But I promise—it doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s make photos that feel natural, emotional, and real.
